Da mesma maneira que Kerouac está para a tradição americana na literatura, Fahey estará igualmente na guitarra. 
Criador de um tipo de fingerpicking original, este destaca-se principalmente pela sua ambiência e originalidade.
Possuidor de uma discografia vasta, nos últimos anos da sua vida chegaria inclusive a colaborar com alguns dos músicos mais reconhecidos no mundo da musica experimentalista. 
Caso por exemplo dos Sonic Youth ou de Sir Richard Bishop.
